Finding Inspiration

Enjoy this famous poem by Dr. Angelou!

As I'm sure everyone knows, yesterday, beloved activist, writer, poet (she wore so many hats!), Maya Angelou, passed away at the age of 86.  I tweeted that I'm certain everything she's ever said is quotable, and I'm not lying.  She has spoken so many inspirational words that have helped many people in different ways.  She has written memoirs and autobiographies about her life, and trials as a young woman.  And yet she was able to push through those hard times and create an amazing, rewarding life for herself.  She's truly someone to admire.  One of her many quotes that spoke to me today is:

"You can only become truly accomplished at something you love.  Don't make money your goal. Instead pursue the things you love doing and then do them so well that people can't take their eyes off of you."

What do I love to do?  What is my passion?  I think those are questions that everyone has or will ask themselves at one point or another.  But seriously, how do any of us figure that out????  My advice is to think about what your most perfect day would look like after you've left your house.  Where would you go?  Who would you see or talk to?  What would you do?  What would you surround yourself with?  What would you eat?  If money or distance wasn't an issue (while still being realistic...), how would you spend that day?  Now ask yourself why you chose that.  Is it because it's something you've never done before, or is it because it's something you do all the time, and gives you the most peace and happiness?

If you chose more than one "perfect day" that's cool too.  I know I can see myself doing multiple things and still being happy with my life.  The problem is, I've never tried any of them.  I mean, we can visualize our perfect situation all we want, but if we don't try it out and see if it's truly what we want to do, what good is that?  So the next step would be to put things into action.  If you see yourself helping children with poverty in third world countries, plan a missions trip or contact a relief organization and see how you can get involved.  If you imagine your perfect day in a designer gown receiving an Oscar, take acting classes or enroll in theatre school, and try joining an agency.  If you plan on being an entrepreneur, create a business plan.  And if you want to travel, book a ticket (I totally understand that a lot of the cool destinations are reeeaal pricey, so maybe save up for that one).  Many of us look at the people who take action and think "wow I wish I could do that", but in reality, why can't we?  There are so many practical ways to take that first step towards living fulfilling lives, so why don't we take it?

Of course there's a lot of fear that comes with following your dreams...fear of failure, of going against the norm, or even the fear that you won't be satisfied once you get to where you envisioned yourself.  First of all, failure is necessary and makes success all the more rewarding.  Secondly, doing what everyone does will never make you stand out for being great.  And thirdly, who said you had to do one thing for 50 years?  No one.  As Dr. Angelou said, you can't be truly accomplished unless you love what you're doing, so if you're unhappy, it's okay to change your mind about the direction you're going in!  Once we get over our fears, whatever they may be, we'll have a clearer vision of what we need to do to accomplish our goals.

Seek inspiration.  Don't wait for it to come to you.  Go out there, make your own experiences, and challenge yourself.  I have yet to hear an inspiring story that begins with "I was laying in bed one night..." (although being in bed is important too).  You don't always have to go far to be inspired, either.  It can start in your community, with your friends, with strangers, with anything and anyone!  Try not to limit yourself by only paying attention to the big things, because you may miss out on the little things that actually turn out to be the big things (pretty sure a quote like this already exists).  And if you're religious like me, pray about it!  Be still, and listen to what you're being told about your calling toward a particular profession or way of life.  I discovered this song called "Am I wrong", that just happened to fit the message of striving for your goals no matter what other people are doing or saying.  As long as we have integrity, follow our hearts, and stand up for what we believe in, we should always be proud of what we've done and where life has taken us!  Be your own person and you can't go wrong!  Click here to listen.

xx

As I said in another post, I'm not a psychologist and I'm not trying to be.  I consider this blog as a way to communicate with you all as friends, so I'm giving advice and sharing my thoughts as a friend.  I don't expect everyone to agree because we all have our own opinions, but if this helps you or you know someone who has been in a rut lately, why not pass it along?  I know I'm not this famous blogger or anything, but it really means a lot to me when people message me and let me know that my blog helps or entertains them in some way.  So thank you!!!

7 Songs We Probably Shouldn't Have Known the Lyrics to as Children

Do you remember sitting in your car seat at the back of your family's vehicle singing about money, cars, and women?  Your parents laughing and thinking it was so cute that you know all the lyrics to a song on the radio?  I know I do.  And, it probably was cute because we probably had no clue what we were talking about.  And that's a good thing.  But now that we're all grown up (I'm 18 now), when we search for an older song we loved, and read the lyrics, it's clear we may have been just a tad corrupted during those car rides.  It was all harmless and songs are generally really good, but below are a few (clean versions--search up the dirty versions if you so choose to!) that most of us can admit to knowing a bit too much of the words, even if we didn't know their true meanings at the time.

1. It Wasn't Me - Shaggy (2001)

Lucky for you, here is the video with all the lovely lyrics.

I know you know it.  Every single one of you.  You were screaming "IT WASN'T ME", but did you really know what you were denying?  I mean, at the time, it was just a catchy song with a beat you could groove to in your booster seat.  In reality, it's about this guy explaining how his girlfriend caught him "creeping" with the girl next door in...many different places around the house, and Shaggy telling him to say it wasn't him.  Most of us are still unclear about what Shaggy is saying on the track, but the chorus was definitely loud and clear.

2. Ride Wit Me - Nelly (2001)

Watch the official Ride Wit Me video.

Watch this video to hear what I'm talking about!

Along with It Wasn't Me, Ride Wit Me was one of my favourite songs growing up.  I must admit, I didn't reaaally know all the lyrics (and I still don't), but I added this because on the radio, the clean version does this cool inhale and outhale sound that I really enjoyed and would often imitate.  It was a few years later, however, that I realized that those sounds symbolized...well...smoking questionable substances.  Ooops.

3. Mesmerize - Ja Rule ft. Ashanti (2002)

Watch the Mesmerize music video here.

I actually like this song.  Ashanti's sweet R&B voice complements the roughness of Ja Rule's, and it is kind of romantic--Ja and Ashanti confessing what they love about each other--but any song with the word "fetish" in the lyrics may not be the best in molding the minds of young ones.  Not to mention singing "love it when you kiss me baaaaaby" when the only ones kissing us at the time were our parents.

4. In Da Club - 50 Cent (2003)

Watch In Da Club here.

Although this song was remixed by BeyoncĂ© and other artists later on, the original 50 Cent version of In Da Club still takes the cake--possibly because I was just so "hood" as a kid.  Once the intro started, I was ready to belt "GO GO GO GO SHAWTY, IT'S YA BIRTHDAY.....AND WE GONNA SIP A CARDY (Bacardi)......My mom was probably glad that I only had a general idea of the lyrics, while I merely loved that this song made me feel so much cooler than I actually was.

5. Get Low - Lil Jon and the East Side Boyz ft. the Ying Yang Twins (2003)

Watch Lil Jon and The East Side Boyz's video here.

Watch Sandra Bullock's "remix" of Get Low here. Ha!

I'm sure we can all identify with Sandra Bullock's dancing to it in The Proposal, because it's kind of what most of us look like when we start singing "To the windooooooww to the wall, to the wall!  Till the sweat drops down my"--wait what?  Okay, maybe the lyrics aren't particularly inspiring, but it can definitely get a party started.

6.  Candy Shop - 50 Cent ft Olivia (2005)

He'll take you to the, er, "candy shop".  Watch here.

50 Cent returns two years later with this track, and my my my.  Candy and lollipops sound good until, well, the rest of the song.  Because how do candy shops even fit in with the rest of the lyrics...?  I'll let you figure it out.

7. Beep - The Pussycat Dolls ft Will.I.Am (2006)

I love the Beep music video just as much as the song itself!

Okay, it's 2006, and we're a little bit older now.  Old enough for this song to grace our ears and stimulate our brains.  This modern burlesque, dance-pop group had fun with radio censors by playing musical beeping sounds, or laughing whenever it seemed like an appropriate word would be sung.  It's actually really clever and the song is girly and fun, not to mention the girls were getting it with their dance moves in the music video above.  But now that we're truly old enough, I'm sure it's a little easier to "ad-lib", and guess which words would be in place of the entertaining beeps.

There are a ton of other songs most of us sang while growing up that take on a whole different meaning now, but ignorance is bliss, and the kids turned out alright (for the most part)!  But these are some of the best received songs by critics and audiences because of their memorable and risque lyrics, as well as tunes and beats we will always recognize when the radio or DJ throws them back.

What songs did you know all the words to growing up?  And an even bigger question: as songs get even more explicit, sexual, and inappropriate, in 10 years, will you play these types of songs in your car, and laugh while your children harmlessly get all the words wrong (or surprisingly right), or change the station in search for more kid-friendly lyrics?

Weekly Friday Favs

1. Favourite Song

Concrete Wall by Zee Avi

Listen to the album here
During my Gossip Girl marathon (I'm obsessed), this weird, soothing, cool indie rock song began to play in the background, and I had to figure out what it was.  The song is called Concrete Wall, a single off of Malaysion singer, Zee Avi's 2011 album, Ghostbird.  The track begins with a captivating, almost haunting chant--boom shi clack clack, boom shi clack clack--that continues throughout the whole song.  But when you delve into the meaning, it is much more than the catchy use of onomatopoeia.  I won't post the lyrics, but if you are on the hunt for new music, and/or  are no stranger to artists like Regina Spektor, Ella Fitzgerald, and other Indie and Jazz musicians, you must give Zee Avi a listen.

2. Favourite Video

Ariana Grande Rapping Big Sean

Watch on Youtube

I was never a HUGE fan of Ariana Grande, but this video won me over.  She is a definite powerhouse, but who knew her rap skills were also on point?! Ha! Love it.

3. Favourite Fashion Piece

Black Vintage Lace Fitted Dress from Sheinside.com

So many ways to wear this dress! I WANT!!

I didn't get to go Boxing Day shopping (the struggle of being a broke university student), but that didn't stop me from browsing my favourite websites for outfit inspiration, and crying at all the cute clothes I couldn't afford.

Anyway, this lace dress from Sheinside.com is absolutely gorgeeoouuus!  I love how the lace detailing overlaps the solid slip underneath, but then becomes sheer on the sleeves and at the top and bottom, creating a kind of scalloped neckline and hemline.  In addition to the lace, the narrow "V" neckline contributes to the dress' classy and vintage appearance.  Sheinside features a Look Book of women wearing some of the items on the website, and seeing how they accessorized and made this dress their own attests to its versatility.  AND it's only $19.99!  See this dress and other stylish women showing off their outfits here.

4. Favourite Quote

I found this on Pinterest.  Follow me!
frolicsome
I love quotes that make me want to be spontaneous and adventurous, and just take advantage of all life has to offer.

That's all for my Friday Favs.  What are yours?

Make sure to check out my Twitter and Instagram and have a great weekend!
