I Wish there was Another Word for "Beautiful"

Source
Earlier this week, I did something I never thought I'd be able to do (at least not yet): I went out in public with no makeup on.  Some people may think that's stupid, or that people who can't be fresh faced are conceited or whatever.  But I, like many people, have acne scars, and they can be embarrassing. They made me feel uncomfortable showing my face for almost six years.  However, a couple weeks ago, I did a chemical peel, which causes your old skin to peel off, and reveal clearer, new skin.  And let me tell you, that was the most torturous week ever (It didn't hurt or anything, but I had to stay home for a week straight...talk about stir crazy!).  Even though I did the peel, the scars were not completely faded, and my skin was nowhere close to being flawless (BeyoncĂ© voice).  Nevertheless, I applied my sunscreen, put on a baseball cap and sunglasses, mustered up courage, and headed out the door.

I had to wait 10 minutes before the bus came.  This meant I had to stand there, outside, where someone I knew could see me and be alarmed at the sight of my face (everyone has only seen me with makeup on).  But no one I knew showed up, and no one took particular interest in me or what I looked like.  This went on for the rest of the journey.  In fact, when I realized that people didn't really care about my appearance, I started gaining a little bit of confidence.  I spoke to sales associates, stopped tugging so much on my cap...I even took my sunglasses off!  After a while, I looked at this as an accomplishment.  I had built up the courage to go out in public showing the real me!

This got me thinking about the people who have insecurities they can't hide, no matter how hard they try: a birth mark, an undesirable facial feature, or even their weight.  I have a greater respect for these people.  Everyday, they have to get out of bed and step into the public eye, being, or at least acting like they are comfortable in their own skin.  Some people may decide to ignore them, or make fun of them because something they can't change.  But they still have to live their lives and choose to be happy.

Sometimes it feels impossible to embrace our flaws, but even the most gorgeous person alive has his/her insecurities.  Everyone has something they scrutinize in the bathroom mirror.  And despite society's idea that we all have to look and have the same idea of "pretty" in order to be accepted, for the most part, people will accept you regardless of what you think is "ugly" or "unattractive" about yourself.  There's no point stressing ourselves out, trying to look a certain way for people who will criticize or put us down anyway.  I mean, we all want to look nice, be complimented, and receive "likes" on our photos, but getting "likes" on Instagram of Facebook isn't everything.  What's most important is how we feel and who we are on the inside.  That way, our internal confidence and positivity can radiate outward, impacting people's lives, rather than attempting to satisfy judgemental eyes.

I truly admire people who accept their imperfections.  There is just something about someone who knows they are beautiful from the inside out, and that the people who know it too are the only ones worth their time.  I guess the point of this long ramble is that although we are ALL beautiful, we ALL have something more to offer the world than physical beauty (and if you don't believe me, just listen to my bby J. Cole's song Crooked Smile).

I've never written a "personal" blog post, but I wanted to post something different this week.  This is really long, probably reeeaally poorly written, and not everyone will agree or enjoy it, but there's no point in gaining a new perspective first-hand, if you can't share it with people who might be interested or impacted (also, the title has nothing to do with the actual blog post but wutevs).

You create beauty with your attitude, your behaviors, your actions. It's all up to you.

Movies for your Moods

Most students went back to school this week, and with the need to refocus, complete assignments and study for exams, I can imagine the different moods everyone is in.  But luckily, there is nothing that a weekend watching movies can't solve!  So I've made up a list of moods, and paired them with a few movies you may want to watch this weekend to supplement that mood.  Think of it as...a mini Songza for films (viewer discretion may be advised!).

1. The "unemotional" (AKA I'm in need of a good cry) mood.

If you're a girl, you'll especially know what I mean.  Or maybe it's just me.  But even when life is going great, after a few months of the same routine, we all just need to cry.  It's not because we're sad or broken, but because crying can sometimes feel like a form of self-therapy, expression, and a release of inhibitions.

2. The "stressed" (AKA If this teacher gives me one more assignment...) mood.

For me, nothing relieves stress like a good ol' comedy film, because laughing is just as much a form of self-therapy as crying.  Settling down with a bogus movie can cause us to laugh without even noticing, relax, get rid of tension, and even work our ab muscles a little bit.

3. The "club can't even handle me" (AKA I'm at home in bed, but I wish I was partying) mood.

Sometimes there is too much work to do on a friday night, that we have no time to go out.  Fortunately, Hollywood decided to start making these party movies that are youthful and funny, yet so cray that we either feel like we were there ourselves, or are jealous that we weren't.

Superbad (2007)

4. The "lovey-dovey" (AKA I'm so single why am I even watching this) mood.

Have you ever wanted to watch a good romance film, and even if you've seen it 80 times, you still aren't prepared for how single you feel when the guy and girl confess their love to each other?  What about when everything works out perfectly for the characters, while you text your best friend about how unfair life is?  Well that's all fine, and everyone loves a good romantic film, but these films have a unique and interesting plot that will hold your attention, and spark more emotions than mere jealousy.

5. The "girly" (AKA my friends and I need something to watch while eating our 8 pizzas tonight) mood.

I love watching feel-good movies with my friends, and then basing our conversations, rehearsing lines, or imitating dance moves from those movies for weeks.  They have great endings that teach you something.  The characters may travel, find themselves, or learn the true meaning of friendship, and it...well...feels good to go on the journey with them.

Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961)

Mean Girls (2004)

Sex and the City (2008)

Burlesque (2010)

6. The "bored" (AKA I need a movie that is as intelligent and clever as I am) mood.

Every once in a while, we desire a movie that will test our mental capacity and get us thinking and contemplating its complex plot.  Or, we just want to applaud a director for adding a twist or unforeseeable ending, as opposed to the predictable films we see on a regular basis.  They're the kind of movies that have us playing detective, and watching the film more than once in order to "crack the code" before any of the main characters.

Shutter Island (2010)

Limitless (2011)

Now You See Me (2013)

7. The "aspiring" (AKA I either aspire to be these guys, or date these guys) mood.

Okay, maybe these men don't have particularly respectable jobs.  And maybe the main characters have murdered or severely hurt a few people.  And perhaps there's been one or two heists thrown into the mix.  But hey, the guys are hot, and the work they do looks so extremely exciting and risky and intense, that it makes it acceptable to root for the bad guys once in a while, right?

The Fast and the Furious movies (2001-)

Takers (2010)

The Avengers (2012)

8. The "daring" (AKA pshh what's a scary movie?) mood.

Personally, I'm never truly scared when I watch scary movies.  However, there are some horror films that may have a few scenes that really make your toes curl, but also have an interesting storyline (at least in my opinion)--the best of both worlds.  And if you really want to be spooked, skip the trailer and go straight to the full length feature!

Case 39 (2009)

Insidious (2010)

Mama (2013)

9. The "Sunday night sadness" (AKA I need something to keep my mind off the fact that school is tomorrow) mood.

So it's Sunday night and tears are forming and lips are quivering.  School is the next day and you may or may not have finished all your homework, but nevertheless, a movie is in order!  A good way to get our minds off such a dreadful day ahead, is to watch a cute Disney or Pixar film.  After all, you can't go wrong with talking animals, pretty dresses, princes, and genuine, animated characters that we maybe love a little too much.  Everyone has their favourite classics, but I've decided to add some of the newer movies that are just as witty and entertaining as the earlier ones.
