Movies for your Moods

Most students went back to school this week, and with the need to refocus, complete assignments and study for exams, I can imagine the different moods everyone is in.  But luckily, there is nothing that a weekend watching movies can't solve!  So I've made up a list of moods, and paired them with a few movies you may want to watch this weekend to supplement that mood.  Think of it as...a mini Songza for films (viewer discretion may be advised!).

1. The "unemotional" (AKA I'm in need of a good cry) mood.

If you're a girl, you'll especially know what I mean.  Or maybe it's just me.  But even when life is going great, after a few months of the same routine, we all just need to cry.  It's not because we're sad or broken, but because crying can sometimes feel like a form of self-therapy, expression, and a release of inhibitions.

2. The "stressed" (AKA If this teacher gives me one more assignment...) mood.

For me, nothing relieves stress like a good ol' comedy film, because laughing is just as much a form of self-therapy as crying.  Settling down with a bogus movie can cause us to laugh without even noticing, relax, get rid of tension, and even work our ab muscles a little bit.

3. The "club can't even handle me" (AKA I'm at home in bed, but I wish I was partying) mood.

Sometimes there is too much work to do on a friday night, that we have no time to go out.  Fortunately, Hollywood decided to start making these party movies that are youthful and funny, yet so cray that we either feel like we were there ourselves, or are jealous that we weren't.

4. The "lovey-dovey" (AKA I'm so single why am I even watching this) mood.

Have you ever wanted to watch a good romance film, and even if you've seen it 80 times, you still aren't prepared for how single you feel when the guy and girl confess their love to each other?  What about when everything works out perfectly for the characters, while you text your best friend about how unfair life is?  Well that's all fine, and everyone loves a good romantic film, but these films have a unique and interesting plot that will hold your attention, and spark more emotions than mere jealousy.

5. The "girly" (AKA my friends and I need something to watch while eating our 8 pizzas tonight) mood.

I love watching feel-good movies with my friends, and then basing our conversations, rehearsing lines, or imitating dance moves from those movies for weeks.  They have great endings that teach you something.  The characters may travel, find themselves, or learn the true meaning of friendship, and it...well...feels good to go on the journey with them.

6. The "bored" (AKA I need a movie that is as intelligent and clever as I am) mood.

Every once in a while, we desire a movie that will test our mental capacity and get us thinking and contemplating its complex plot.  Or, we just want to applaud a director for adding a twist or unforeseeable ending, as opposed to the predictable films we see on a regular basis.  They're the kind of movies that have us playing detective, and watching the film more than once in order to "crack the code" before any of the main characters.

7. The "aspiring" (AKA I either aspire to be these guys, or date these guys) mood.

Okay, maybe these men don't have particularly respectable jobs.  And maybe the main characters have murdered or severely hurt a few people.  And perhaps there's been one or two heists thrown into the mix.  But hey, the guys are hot, and the work they do looks so extremely exciting and risky and intense, that it makes it acceptable to root for the bad guys once in a while, right?

The Fast and the Furious movies (2001-)

8. The "daring" (AKA pshh what's a scary movie?) mood.

Personally, I'm never truly scared when I watch scary movies.  However, there are some horror films that may have a few scenes that really make your toes curl, but also have an interesting storyline (at least in my opinion)--the best of both worlds.  And if you really want to be spooked, skip the trailer and go straight to the full length feature!

Case 39 (2009)

9. The "Sunday night sadness" (AKA I need something to keep my mind off the fact that school is tomorrow) mood.

So it's Sunday night and tears are forming and lips are quivering.  School is the next day and you may or may not have finished all your homework, but nevertheless, a movie is in order!  A good way to get our minds off such a dreadful day ahead, is to watch a cute Disney or Pixar film.  After all, you can't go wrong with talking animals, pretty dresses, princes, and genuine, animated characters that we maybe love a little too much.  Everyone has their favourite classics, but I've decided to add some of the newer movies that are just as witty and entertaining as the earlier ones.
